I mostly agree with Guy Kawasaki in his post, ‘How to Go on the Offensive with Facebook‘. Sure it would be great to have these amazing profiles on Facebook, where a recruiter or others that would judge you could get an unrealistic picture of who you are. Basically Guy is suggesting that you take the time to create the You brand and market it to the right audience. I agree, but I also want to allow the real people to have those pictures of their bodies painting with international flags at that art festival or those fun times on the boat at the lake, ready to share with 500 of your closest friends. To achieve this I propose you have a profile for your alter-ego meeting societies expectations of you and then another one for the you that didn’t know someone had a camera at that party.
Ultimately I’d love to live in a society where people were judged by their skills and accomplishments and afforded the luxury of being human, knowing that failure is part of the process and actually having some fun along the way. I try to live by the motto work first then fun and it’s worked pretty well. But when you have fun make sure you’re focused on enjoying yourself just as much as you focus on work (if not more). From a hiring perspective I have always tried to hire like this and have actually had great success growing teams. But the reality is very few hiring managers are open minded, so take Guy’s words to heart and build that brand called You!
My question is when will someone offer a service to create these alternate profiles showing that (un)justly admired and unrealistic profile that you can show to the judgmental and get their admiration? Do you have these gold profiles set public and keep your ‘real’ profile private? What do you think about having multiple profiles?
