Topic Ideas for Ignite Presentation

by Fred von Graf on June 17, 2009

Have you attended an Oreilly Ignite Event?  Have you considered speaking at one?  After talking with friends in Seattle that have been involved with Ignite since the beginning, and attending Ignite Phoenix yesterday, I’ve come up with a few ideas for topics I could speak to for the next Ignite (insert any city).

Here are some of the ideas I had right away:

  1. The world is finally catching up with me. (Dynamic jobs, interests, social tools are getting there, entrepreneurial spirit, social media, etc)
  2. How I get to blow up the man each year! (Joining the Burning Man Pyro Team)
  3. New Media types can learn a lot from the hippies that run Burning Man!
  4. The 3rd largest city in Nevada for a week. (What is Burning Man)
  5. So you think you know something about building community? You may still have something to learn… (Old techniques still apply with todays new communications frameworks – the human’s haven’t changed, just the way they communicate)
  6. How do you stand out in all the noise?  (we are constantly bombarded with information (noise), so how do we filter the good stuff?  How do you get through the noise if you have a message to share?)
  7. Spy tech for the layman. (Great tools, toys and techniques)
  8. Just how secure are you?  (Physical, information and data)
  9. Social engineering, surely it doesn’t work in today’s paranoid world? (Guess again)
  10. Improvised munitions when you find yourself trapped in a grocery store. (Maybe not)
  11. Social Media for Businesses (What to ask, what to know, what to do and who to know).
  12. I prefer having options! (Explaining the thought process and means of execution to optimize the number of options you have in any situation)
  13. I’ve only killed three people, please don’t become the fourth. Thank you! (and other shocking presentation titles)
  14. How much do you know about the people taking care of your kids? Beyond the basics of googling your nanny.
  15. The art of Project Management in 5 minutes.
  16. How to meet amazing people in your town!
  17. Phoenix drivers are awesome! (a work of social satire)
  18. US driving, an exercise in risk. Deaths by drivers compared to other means, and why? Satirical look at the US driving system and what happens when you follow the money.
  19. Basic Life Support Class – 8 hour class in 5 minutes. As a certified AHA BLS for Healthcare professional’s instructor I thought it would be fun to present a full day class in 5 minutes including CPR dummy.
  20. What will you need when the Zombie Apocalypse happens? (A practical guide to surviving)
  21. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Social Media for Business. (Humorous and thought provoking examples of what can happen when your company starts uses Social Media channels).
  22. 5 Minutes of Random Fred (Whatever I feel like talking about for 5 minutes, have a great idea for slides for this).
  23. Do something amazing with your life, the only real limitations are the ones you create. (A breakdown of how to escape the mundane, Tim Ferriss style.
  24. Some Great Examples of Social Psychology and how it can help you in business.
  25. The best of Dale Carnegie & 7 Habits training in 5 Minutes.
  26. What you should look for in your next employee / consultant. (The real important questions to ask when hiring)

What do you think?  Do any of these topics sound interesting?  Would you like to hear any of them at the next Ignite event?   Would love to hear from you on other suggested topics, or which one is your favorite.

These ideas are great. Would like to see something on going green. I’m not driving right now in Phoenix – was fine until it finally got hot last week. Still think about getting a car again – but I think if I make it through the summer, I may not. Also – talk about local ride-share and car-share programs.

Laura thanks for the comment! I drive a hybrid and would love to have an electric vehicle but I don’t think I’d be a good speaker on driving green / ride sharing. I did however get see an amazing green living structure from a very clever friend today. He’s built a HexaYurt for use at Burningman and I was so very impressed that I’m seriously considering using one myself. Which would mean that I could take my Hybrid vehicle instead of a 25′ RV, how’s that for green :)

Believe it or not, your topic #20 was presented at Ignite Phoenix #2.

Hey Brandon – I’m laughing while replying here! I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised but I still am. And that’s why I love Ignite and what’s all about!

OK scratch #20, from the list.

Thanks!
Fred
